Inter Milan star Hakan Calhanoglu has thanked club president Beppe Marotta for his ‘understanding’ amid the latest injury scare.
During his latest interview ahead of tomorrow’s match against Montenegro via FCInter1908, the Turkey international also maintained his ambition to feature against Hellas Verona.
Calhanoglu sustained a minor thigh issue in Turkey’s 0-0 home draw against Wales last weekend.
Back from a two-week spell on the sidelines, he joined the national team for crunch UEFA Nations League games in November.
However, another fitness setback forced him off in the first half against Wales on Saturday.
Turkey would go on to draw that encounter, with Kerem Akturkoglu wasting a last-gasp penalty.
Despite that gut-wrenching result, Calhanoglu insists the Crescent-Stars delivered a decent performance.
“We played well in the game against Wales, but we didn’t win,” he stated.
“The most important thing was not to lose, and we didn’t lose.
“If everything goes well, I will happily return to Milan.”
Calhanoglu had to undergo an MRI scan after the game to understand the extent of the problem.
Fortunately for Inter, it’s nothing ‘serious,’ as confirmed by club doctor Pietro Volpi.
Therefore, the 30-year-old hopes to be in contention for the upcoming league meeting with Verona.
But first, Calhanoglu wanted to thank Marotta.
“I thank Inter president Marotta for his understanding,” he said.
“After the game, they contacted me and our coach directly.
“I decided to stay here, but unfortunately, tomorrow I will not be able to be on the pitch.
“The old injury is back, but it’s not serious. I don’t have a muscle injury.
“I hope to be on the pitch for the match against Verona.”
Inter will resume their Scudetto defense on Saturday at Stadio Marc’Antonio Bentegodi.
Hopefully, Calhanoglu will be at Simone Inzaghi’s disposal.
