Aston Villa endured another frustrating Premier League outing as the Villains could only manage a 1-1 draw with Sunderland.

Villa boss Unai Emery was unsurprisingly frustrated with another listless showing from his side, which leaves them down in 18th on the league log.

The Villains have not won any of their first five Premier League games, and there are serious concerns about how hapless the Birmingham-based outfit looks in these matches.

Despite the hosts going down to ten men, Villa could not capitalise.

It has been an extremely underwhelming season from the Villans so far, and Emery is showing concern.

The Spanish tactician described his players’ showings as lazy and said he does not recognise his team in a blunt post-match press conference.

Emery said (via the Daily Mail): “We have to look for our identity. I am frustrated and disappointed at how we played, at how we are not playing, feeling comfortable with our style.

“We have to try to recover our personality in duels as well as our confidence.

“Then, as well, we were lazy sometimes in defence. Really lazy. For example, when we concede, we were lazy. Maybe it is the consequences.

“No, it doesn’t look like my team,” Emery continued. “My worry is that we are not playing with our identity.

“We are missing it. I know that we need to get confidence, collectively and individually.”

Now, Emery will hope that a return to Villa Park sparks a turnaround.

With Bologna visiting in the Europa League and Fulham up next in the Premier League, Villa have a massive chance to reset their season in front of their fans.

But to do that, they need their leading man to step up. Ollie Watkins, still without a goal this season, squandered a golden chance to win the game against Sunderland.

For Villa to climb away from danger, their talisman must rediscover his finishing touch and lead the revival.
