It was a week of varying fortunes for Liverpool at Molyneux as the champions slumped to a 2-1 defeat on Tuesday night, before securing passage to the FA Cup 6th Round with a 3-1 victory over Wolves.

The Reds conceded yet another injury-time winner in the Premier League as André Trindade’s 93rd-minute shot deflected past Alisson. Arne Slot’s men suffered their ninth league defeat of the campaign after another poor away performance.

Youngster Rio Ngmoha starred in Friday night’s win, but it was two of the club’s elder statesmen in Andy Robertson and Mo Salah, who found themselves on the scoresheet, with Curtis Jones adding the third.

Tuesday’s loss could prove significant in the race for the Champions League spots, with rivals Manchester United and Aston Villa also thankfully dropping points. Familiar themes of the season were noticeable as LFC struggled to create away from home before conceding in the game’s dying minutes.

Many fans have aimed a finger of blame squarely at Slot for another unacceptable performance. With just nine league games remaining and qualification for Europe’s elite competition on a knife-edge, should the head coach be worrying about his position?

On the latest episode of our Journo Insight show, the Liverpool Echo’s LFC correspondent Paul Gorst gave his thoughts on the future of Arne Slot.

Paul said:

“This summer, he’s going to be two-thirds into his three-year contract, isn’t he? And then you make a decision whether you back him for one more season and see if it reverts to the mean of Liverpool being much improved, or whether this season is a sign of where they generally are at under Slot.

“There’s just so much uncertainty around at the moment. Arne Slot is going to be Liverpool’s manager for the end of this season. Absolutely nailed on.

“It’s a case of what happens between now and the end of the season. If they win the Champions League… you can’t sack a manager who’s won the Premier League and the Champions League in his two seasons.

“Do you sack a manager who’s won the Premier League and the FA Cup in his two seasons?

“If he gets in the top four, is it enough for the decision-makers at Liverpool to think, give him a final year and hope that all the troubles that have surrounded this season were just a cursed season?

“It would be ludicrous not to be sounding out the availability or the intentions of maybe one or two elsewhere, even if it’s only quietly. For now, Arne Slot is the Liverpool manager, at the very least until the end of the season, and then see what happens and how the season ends and what Liverpool have got from it.”

REDMEN REACTS

Liverpool’s tumultuous season continued in a familiar vein this week. After four consecutive victories, a trip to the bottom of the table Wolves seemed like the ideal place to continue a decent run of form and strike a blow in the battle for the Champions League places. The Reds, however, had other ideas. The side seems content to go into half-time at 0-0, especially away from home. This then leaves Slot’s men vulnerable to late equalisers or winners. Much damage has been dealt to Arne’s reputation after a dream debut campaign. He needs to provide some evidence has he is addressing the evident weaknesses in his team between now and the end of the season or risk losing the faith of the fans. LFC cannot go into 2026/27 continuing to concede late goals or playing passively against the league’s weaker sides.
