The recent El Clasico between Barcelona and Real Madrid was one of the most emotionally charged matches between the two sides in recent history. It all stemmed from Lamine Yamal’s words ahead of the game.
The Spaniard showed no humility in his words before facing an opposition he had beaten five times last season. However, Lamine did not have one of his best games, and Madrid made sure to let him know it after the final whistle.
Speaking on El Cafelito, hosted by Josep Pedrerol and quoted by SPORT, former Los Blancos striker Ivan Zamorano did not hold back his opinion of the Barça prodigy.
The Chilean said he would not sign Lamine Yamal for Real Madrid, as he believed the teenager did not reflect the club’s identity.
“I wouldn’t sign Lamine Yamal for Real Madrid because he doesn’t have the essence or the soul of what a Real Madrid player should be.”
He elaborated on what, in his view, defines a player worthy of wearing the white shirt: “Real Madrid is a team with class and culture. The players who play for Madrid must represent that.”
Subsequently, the Chilean also named Pedri as the Barcelona player he would love to sign for the Madrid-based club. Here is what he said:
“I’d sign Pedri — he’s a star, a phenomenon… and he doesn’t talk much. He’s humble, simple, and says only what’s necessary. Pedri has the essence and soul of Real Madrid.”
Sorry, Zamorano, but Pedri is Blaugrana through and through.
The Chilean also suggested that Barcelona must handle Lamine carefully if they want him to reach his full potential:
“They must try to guide Lamine Yamal. Only then will he become a great player. The players who leave a legacy are cut from a different cloth.”
Zamorano further pointed to Lionel Messi as an example for the teenager to follow:
“I never heard Messi say that Real Madrid cheats — and he was the best in the world.”
The Chilean feels Real Madrid is a club of class and that Lamine does not necessarily fit in. To put it into context, though, a number of their players talk a big game too, which is not viewed through the same lens.
The thing with Lamine is that he is 18 and at the top of his powers, and this does not sit easily with everyone. They are waiting for an opportunity to see the Spaniard fail, scrutinising his every action under the microscope.
It remains to be seen what happens with Lamine the next time Barcelona face Madrid. He will be keen to prove a point, and only time will tell how it plays out.
