There’s always one player in an academy setup who will catch the eye of a fan. Of course, within the academy infrastructure, you have your flair players, the ones that will grab all the headlines through goals and assists. JJ Gabriel is that for Manchester United at the moment, and the 15-year-old will no doubt go on to have a wonderful career at the club if the fans allow him to develop correctly.

But, amongst the flair and audaciousness of those players, there’s another ilk of footballer which garners the love and admiration of the fans. A tenacious midfielder with a wonderful temperament, and a pure love for the game and the club he’s playing for. James Garner is a player that comes to mind who slipped away from the United first team and went on to be successful at Everton and Nottingham Forest. Scott McTominay is another, loved and appreciated by the United fan base for his desire to give it all for the club. It was like one of the fans out on the pitch just living their dream.

Jacob Devaney feels like he falls into the same category of footballer.

There have been several occasions watching United’s academy sides over the past 12-18 months where I’ve been drawn to simply watching Devaney work in the centre of the midfield. His maturity in possession and out of possession for a player of his age is immense. It felt like he could play a level above even during his time with the U18’s under Adam Lawrence, and that proved to be true last season when he went to St Mirren on loan and was one of the standout players in the second half of the campaign.

On the 31st of March 2025, I tweeted about Devaney while watching United against Villa in the FA Youth Cup. What stands out most about the midfielder, similar to the manager that he’s working under at the moment, is that he always seems to find the right pass. He has a clear understanding of how to play the position he’s deployed in within the central midfield infrastructure, and he’s the type of tempo-setter United have lacked in the middle of the park for some years.

It would be no surprise given his similarities to Michael Carrick if Devaney was trusted to make first-team progress this season. United’s pursuit of a third midfielder is underway, and it is likely to end up with the club signing a third player in the position for upwards of £60m, but the thing about preaching Youth, Courage and Success is, at some stage, you have to live by that mantra.

Carrick raved about the midfielder, who played centre-back in United’s first pre-season game against Wrexham, post-match. Devaney’s versatility, one of the many attributes that would give him an edge in the United first team. It will be interesting to see how he continues to perform in the coming weeks of the pre-season tour, with a tie against Rosenborg up next on Friday.

Many fans crave the dopamine hit of a new signing, but how about the sheer adoration of an academy lad who lives and breathes Man United, breaking into the team and becoming a fixture in the starting eleven, or at the very least, the squad?

If United fans were given the choice to sign a new player now or keep Kobbie Mainoo, they’d keep Kobbie Mainoo. Who’s to say if Devaney breaks in and becomes a part of the first team, he won’t be lauded on the same scale as someone like Mainoo in a year and a half’s time?

The midfielder comes from a football background. His father, Martin Devaney, has played over 400 games in his career for clubs like Cheltenham Town, Watford and even Bohemians back in Ireland. Martin continuously shows his support and pride for Jacob on social media, which is one of the best things about seeing him succeed in his career.

People may call the next statement crazy, but I have always been more impressed coming away from a game watching Jacob Devaney play than I have watching someone like Manu Kone play. That’s a genuine belief in how much I rate Devaney as a footballer. I think United as an academy lacked his presence last year, and I think had he not gone on loan, the 21s would have at least come away with a trophy last season, and I think the 18’s come away with that FA Youth Cup.

His maturity was praised by Stephen Robinson, St Mirren’s head coach, when he first signed. Robinson stated that he usually does not take first loans from clubs, but Devaney’s maturity led him to completely override his recruitment approach.

It was a decision that proved fruitful, as the 19-year-old was a pivotal part of St. Mirren’s squad between January and the end of the campaign. The Irishman, born in Barnsley, started 16 of his side’s 18 games during the time he signed for the club until the end of his loan, with one being in the Scottish FA Cup semi-final against Celtic. The United midfielder also played in both relegation play-off games for St. Mirren, as they stayed in the Scottish Premier Division for another season.

Devaney himself is adamant to play first-team football this season, willing to go out on loan if he isn’t going to get the correct opportunities with United. If it does come to the 19-year-old going on loan, a Premier League club should definitely come into the conversation. Ireland will also be very attentive to the progress of the midfielder.

“I want to play first-team football, whether that be at Manchester United for the next year or not. The main aim and goal for me is to play for United week in, week out. So whether I have to go on loan again and gain more valuable experience like what I have done at St. Mirren, that’s what I’ll do, or whether that be in the building, learning from the best, which is here at Man United, so we’ll see what happens.” – Jacob Devaney speaking to Tyrone Marshall at MEN.

Heimir Halgrimsson does not have anything close to a profile of player like Devaney in the Ireland setup, and if he continues his impressive development, it would be hard not to imagine the academy talent being part of the Ireland setup for the Euro 2028 campaign.

Big decisions to be made for United this summer, but if they take a gamble on Jacob Devaney, it’s a gamble they will not regret.
