James Rodriguez, Colombia’s captain, spent 72 hours in hospital with severe dehydration following the friendly against France, the Colombian federation said.
He was withdrawn in the 63rd minute of the 1-3 defeat to France. The episode occurred the following day and the hospitalisation was precautionary.
The case is being managed with his club in Minnesota. There has been encouraging progress and steady improvement. Any link to musculoskeletal injuries or to his current football workload has been ruled out.
Rodriguez is 34 and turns 35 on 12 July. This summer is likely to bring his final World Cup.
Colombia open against Uzbekistan on 18 June, then face the Democratic Republic of the Congo on 24 June and Portugal on 28 June. His standout World Cup memory remains the 2014 quarter-final in Brazil, a 1-2 loss to Brazil, when he finished top scorer with six goals.
