Liverpool’s Jayden Danns was expected to gain valuable experience at Sunderland after securing a January loan move, but injuries have derailed his progress. The 19-year-old striker has yet to feature for the Black Cats, with ongoing fitness issues casting doubt over whether he will play at all this season.
According to Sunderland Echo, Sunderland head coach Regis Le Bris provided an update on Danns’ situation, stating: “With Jayden, there is no update at the moment.”
While the club remains hopeful that the Liverpool loanee could still contribute before the season concludes, there is no imminent return date, leaving Danns’ role in Sunderland’s promotion push uncertain.
Danns’ move to Sunderland came with a caveat: an existing back injury that had already seen him miss a significant portion of the season for Liverpool. Initially diagnosed with a stress fracture in pre-season, the young forward’s fitness struggles continued, forcing him to remain on Merseyside for treatment rather than link up with his loan club.
Sunderland Echo’s Phil Smith reports that the Black Cats still believe he could feature before the end of the campaign, but an earlier update from Roker Report suggested he may not play at all this season.
“It is maintained that the Black Cats are hopeful of involving Danns before the season is up, but Smith reports that ‘no return is imminent’.”
With Sunderland’s medical team closely monitoring his recovery, the decision on whether Danns will play this season remains in the balance.

Sunderland are firmly in the hunt for a place in the Championship play-offs, currently sitting 15 points clear of seventh place with nine games to play.
Should they secure a top-six finish, Danns’ potential return timeline could extend beyond May 3, the final day of the regular season, and into the play-off semi-finals (May 8/9 and 12/13) or even the final at Wembley on May 24.
That additional window gives him a slim chance of featuring, but whether Le Bris will risk integrating an untested player into such a crucial phase of the season is highly questionable.
Even if Danns is declared fit in time for the final stretch of the campaign, Sunderland already have strong attacking options.
Given the club’s well-stocked forward line, throwing in a player with no competitive minutes since January might not be a risk worth taking. However, Danns has already demonstrated a knack for important goals at senior level for Liverpool, meaning late-season heroics cannot be entirely ruled out.
If he proves his fitness, he could provide an unexpected wildcard option for Sunderland, particularly in high-stakes play-off matches.

The Danns loan move now feels like a wasted opportunity. The primary aim of sending young players on loan is to gain valuable first-team minutes, but in Danns’ case, the transfer has been disrupted from the outset.
Sunderland’s willingness to push the deal through despite medical concerns was always a gamble, and in hindsight, Liverpool might regret not choosing a more suitable destination—or keeping him at the club to manage his recovery internally.
That said, Liverpool fans will still hope that Danns recovers in time to make an impact. His impressive finishing ability, composure in front of goal, and pressing style fit the mould of a modern Liverpool forward. A successful stint in the Championship would have given Arne Slot a chance to assess his long-term role at the club.
Looking ahead, Liverpool must decide whether to send Danns out on loan again next season or reintegrate him into their under-23s setup before making a call on his future.
Ultimately, this injury-hit loan spell has not worked out as planned, but if Sunderland do make the play-offs, there’s still a chance for Danns to contribute one last time before returning to Anfield.
