Jefferson recalls Marco Silva’s role in denting Benfica’s title bid | OneFootball

Jefferson has welcomed the prospect of Marco Silva moving to Benfica, recalling the night his goal for Estoril dented the club’s 2012/13 title bid.

With three matches remaining that season, Benfica were four points clear after a win at Marítimo in Madeira, celebrations suggesting the title was near. The following round they drew 1-1 with Estoril at the Luz, Jefferson scored for the Canarinhos.

Porto then closed the gap and overtook in the penultimate round thanks to Kelvin’s dramatic strike, with Jorge Jesus on his knees.

"I tell Marco Silva, I made you a coach," Jefferson said. "For me it was gratifying," he told Record.

"Marco Silva has the capacity to coach any team in the world. He has already coached Sporting and would be taking a very good step, Benfica are a great club. If he coaches Benfica, I am sure it will go well," he added.

Benfica are working to secure Silva to replace José Mourinho, although the deal is far from simple. Fulham have offered a renewal through 2030 worth around €7.5 million net per year, figures that would be hard for Benfica to match.
