Manchester United continue to be linked with a host of top midfielders as the 2026 winter transfer window approaches.
Ruben Amorim is expected to reshape his midfield next year, with hopes of eventually unleashing a finely‑tuned engine room.
Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro, drawing on their experience and brilliance, have been reliable as United’s midfield pivot. Yet there is an admission that the levels at the centre of the park remain short of where they should be.
As mobile and dominant as Amorim wants his midfield to become, that vision can only be realised if he secures the dynamic profiles his system craves.
One of those midfielders is Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Joao Gomes. A modern‑day ball‑winner, Gomes is admired for his tenacity, ball recovery, and ability to disrupt opposition play. He is increasingly viewed as the perfect heir to Casemiro.
Recent reports suggested United were working on a deal, with contacts established and a winter switch discussed. While talk of a January move has since been dismissed, a fresh claim promising claim has dropped.
Mark Brus, writing via Caught Offside, has breathed new life into the Gomes pursuit by dismissing the biggest threat to the transfer. He explained:
“It’s understood that Liverpool were also closely monitoring Gomes, though I’m reliably told that their interest has now cooled.
“So, for the time being at least, if anyone’s going to sign Gomes it would probably be United, with sources close to a number of the game’s leading agents informing me that there is a ‘strong appreciation’ of the Brazilian’s qualities at Old Trafford.”
Such admissions mean United are now competing with no one in this race, a scenario that should give INEOS the confidence to press ahead.
With United’s midfield crying out for bite and physicality, Gomes can certainly offer that.
His Premier League experience, much like summer signings Bryan Mbeumo or Matheus Cunha, suggests he could be an instant hit if signed.
Should a winter move materialise, Gomes would not only provide the immediate lift United need but also set the tone for the anticipated midfield overhaul at the club.
Beyond Gomes, United may also explore moves for Adam Wharton, Elliot Anderson, or Carlos Baleba as they look to solve their midfield puzzle finally.
