Joao Gomes is leaving Wolves to join Villa in a £38m transfer, the biggest deal yet between the West Midlands rivals.

According to ExpressAndStar.com, the Brazilian has departed Wolves’ training base in Portugal and will return to the UK to finalise the move.

Villa turned to Gomes after a long-term injury to Amadou Onana, then saw Youri Tielemans join Manchester United for £38m earlier this week.

Talks have also been held with Bayern Munich over a possible loan for Portugal midfielder Joao Palhinha. Atletico Madrid had been strongly linked with Gomes after Wolves’ relegation, but no agreement emerged.

Discussions between Villa and Wolves accelerated in recent days. The 25-year-old is due to undergo a medical before completing the switch.

Villa are also on course to sign Freiburg midfielder Johan Manzambi in a club-record deal before the end of the week. Right-back Andres Garcia has joined Getafe on a season-long loan.

Gomes arrived at Molineux from Flamengo in 2023 and made 130 appearances in all competitions, scoring eight and providing six assists. Manchester United had been credited with interest, but Villa have acted decisively.
