Jordan Henderson has joined Chelsea on a two-year deal, becoming Xabi Alonso’s eighth first-team signing and, at 36, their most senior arrival since BlueCo bought the club in 2022.

Last week his Brentford contract was terminated after interest from the club’s west London rivals emerged.

Henderson said the scale of the club, his admiration for Alonso and the quality of the squad made the move irresistible, and he praised the owners’ ambition. He added that he wants to give everything every day, on and off the pitch, to help the team, and is excited to start.

He captained Liverpool to the Premier League title in 2020, a year after lifting the Champions League. The midfielder left for Al-Ettifaq in 2023, returned to Europe with Ajax after six months, then signed for Brentford last summer.

Capped 91 times by England, he was a surprise inclusion in Thomas Tuchel’s World Cup squad this summer. He is recovering from a broken wrist suffered during celebrations after the last-16 win over Mexico, when he was booked as an unused substitute.

His arrival follows the signing of Brighton’s Danny Welbeck, another former Sunderland player, last week. Chelsea have shifted from a policy of recruiting exclusively young players.
