Liverpool fell to a 3-2 defeat against Brentford in West London and while the result intensified scrutiny on Arne Slot, the narrative of the night centred on Jordan Henderson facing his former club for the first time. The sight of the former Liverpool captain in Brentford colours felt surreal for many supporters. For Henderson, it marked a personal milestone in a career that continues to evolve, now at 35 years of age.
This fixture was already loaded with subplots as Caoimhin Kelleher, Sepp van den Berg and Jordan Henderson all featured for Brentford. Liverpool arrived hoping to build on their midweek win, however they were unable to maintain momentum. Four successive league defeats have raised concerns among supporters, with midfield balance and leadership repeatedly coming under the microscope.
Henderson addressed his reunion with Liverpool after the final whistle, speaking openly about the emotions of the occasion. He told TNT Sports after Brentford’s 3,2 win:“I had been at Liverpool for so long,” Henderson told TNT Sports after Brentford’s 3-2 win.
“It’s always deep inside me forever now as it was my life for 12 years. It was a little bit strange but as soon as the whistle went, it was business as usual and I was ready to go and I’d be in the right frame of mind, which I was.
“I was fully in and felt as good as I ever have. I was there 12 years, dedicated a lot of my life to it. My kids were born there. It holds a special place in my heart.
“I still want Liverpool to do well, of course not when we’re playing them, but overall. That will never change. The fans have always been amazing. It was nice to see a few of them, I know a few of them left a bit early because of the result. But it was nice to see them again.”
The quotes served as a reminder of Henderson’s deep-rooted connection with Liverpool and his place in the club’s recent history.

During his 12 years at Anfield, Henderson was often described as a leader who set standards on and off the pitch. His technical qualities were frequently debated, yet his importance within Liverpool’s tactical structure under Jurgen Klopp had long been known inside the dressing room.
At Brentford, he is demonstrating both leadership and football intelligence. His positional awareness, pressing triggers and passing range remain evident. Liverpool supporters watching on would recognise the way he marshalled transitions and provided defensive cover, particularly when Brentford’s full backs advanced, something Liverpool’s current midfield has struggled to replicate consistently.
It is impossible to ignore the ongoing conversation among supporters. Liverpool’s midfield has lacked the same control, organisation and vocal leadership since Henderson’s departure in 2023. Arne Slot has begun a new cycle at the club and while long term progression may depend on a refreshed squad identity, the absence of a figure capable of dictating tempo in difficult moments has been noticeable.
His exit was viewed by some as a natural evolution, however his qualities remain relevant in Premier League football. As Liverpool navigate a challenging period, the debate over whether allowing Jordan Henderson to leave was the correct decision continues to gather traction.
