José Mourinho returned to Lisbon on Sunday after a swift trip to Berlin and declined to speak, leaving his Benfica future shrouded in uncertainty.

He was seen in the arrivals hall at Humberto Delgado Airport after attending the German Cup final between Bayern Munich and Stuttgart. Reports in Spain suggested the visit was exploratory work for Real Madrid to watch Michael Olise, but Bayern Munich were not looking to sell.

Images shared by media and on social networks showed him landing alone. In silence, he drove himself home in his own car, without any entourage, and offered no comment to reporters.

Mourinho remains Benfica coach, as he has not formally informed Rui Costa of any departure. A potential return to Real Madrid has been held up by club elections, scheduled for seven June.

If Florentino Pérez is re-elected, it is thought a presentation could follow quickly, although nothing is certain. To cover a possible exit, Benfica are assessing Marco Silva, who is due to decide this week whether to stay at Fulham or seek a new challenge.
