The Real Madrid elections have involved some surprises and in the case of Florentino Perez’s decision to call elections, some surreal ones too. Perez has again raised eyebrows with some of his approach to securing a fresh mandate, with Jose Mourinho at the heart of his plans.
For some time it has been rumoured that Mourinho will take over Real Madrid after a difficult season, which for the second year in a row, yielded no trophies. Mourinho has reportedly already signed his deal with Los Blancos, and is in discussions over his preferred transfer activity. Perez has also announced Ibrahima Konate as his first signing, and on social media, confirmed that Mourinho would be returning if he is re-elected. A video of Mourinho saying ‘Yes’ in a Real Madrid strip was released by his campaign channel.

As per Diario Record, and quoted by Cadena SER, the video was a surprise not just to Benfica, but also Mourinho himself. The Portuguese manager has told his current club that the video is in fact an AI creation, rather than a real promotional campaign he took part in. Had he done so, it could have legal consequences. At any rate, despite it being an open secret that he will move to Real Madrid, it has gone down poorly in Portugal that the video appeared before Mourinho officially communicated a desire to leave.

In a second update from Record, this time carried by Diario AS, the Portuguese outlet explain that Real Madrid have communicated their intention to activate Mourinho’s €15m release clause next week. The former Real Madrid manager still has a year left on his Benfica contract. Either way, it seems that his future is a foregone conclusion if Perez does return to power this Sunday in the elections.
