Journalist: Chelsea offered encouragement over potential summer move for “highly regarded player” | OneFootball

Chelsea have received encouragement in their attempts to sign Tottenham midfielder Lucas Bergvall according to reports.

The Blues had an enquiry for Bergvall knocked back in January as they looked to bring in another midfielder due to injury issues with Romeo Lavia and Dario Essugo.

Chelsea also made an initial enquiry for Douglas Luiz, before the Brazil international opted to join former club Aston Villa on loan.

Chelsea receive encouragement over Lucas Bergvall

Chelsea ended up not signing a midfielder, with Lavia now closing in on a return after playing 45 minutes for the under-21s against Leeds on Friday.

However, midfield is still said to be a priority for the summer with the Blues looking to ease the burden on Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo.

Chelsea have been linked with both Elliot Anderson and Adam Wharton, but according to transfer correspondent Pete O’Rourke the Blues have received encouragement over a potential move for Bergvall.

“Well look, if Tottenham are out of Europe and struggling again, they’re going to find themselves more susceptible to offers for their best players and Bergvall definitely comes into that reckoning,” he told Football Insider.

“He’s a highly-regarded player and he’s done well since he arrived at Tottenham.

“Obviously, he’s out with a long-term injury, so he’s been a big miss for Tottenham in the fight they find themselves in for survival as well.

“He’s highly regarded at Tottenham, he’s under a long contract until 2031 and there was no surprise that they rebuffed those inquiries from Chelsea and Villa in the January window.

European competition could be make or break

Whilst Tottenham want to keep Bergvall, O’Rourke feels it could be difficult if they miss out on European competition, which looks likely.

“There was no chance they were going to let him leave then. Tottenham see him as a key part of their long-term future at the club.

“But if Spurs continue to struggle and maybe miss out on European competition, you might have other clubs ready to test their resolve to keep hold of their best players including Bergvall.”
