Jürgen Klopp, 59, has reached an agreement to take the Germany job, the German Football Association announced on Saturday 11 July 2026, subject to approval from his current employer Red Bull.

DFB president Bernd Neuendorf and vice-president Hans-Joachim Watzke held detailed talks with Klopp in New York on Friday. The parties settled the main terms of a potential contract and discussions will continue next week. Both sides are confident negotiations could be concluded successfully, with any deal still needing approval from the DFB supervisory board and general assembly.

Klopp has worked since 1 January 2025 as Red Bull’s global director of football, overseeing the group’s clubs.

He emerged as the preferred candidate after Julian Nagelsmann resigned following Germany’s round-of-32 exit to Paraguay at the 2026 World Cup, a 1-1 draw and 4-3 loss on penalties. Since lifting a fourth world title in 2014, Germany have gone out in the group stage in 2018 and 2022, then in the round of 32 in late June.

After successful spells with Mainz and Borussia Dortmund, Klopp became a Liverpool icon, winning the Champions League in 2019 and the Premier League in 2020 to end a 30-year wait. He left the Reds in June 2024 after nine seasons.
