It’s been a brilliant week in the career of Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez.
The 25-year-old hit a hat-trick midweek in a LaLiga win against Rayo Vallecano to get his season up and running after a sluggish start.

But he saved the best for the weekend when he scored twice in a memorable Madrid derby win against Real Madrid. That made it FIVE goals in only two matches for Alvarez - who had been without a goal since matchday one in the Spanish top flight.
The Argentina World Cup winner served a reminder of his talents and evidence for why Atletico were minded to pay Manchester City €95m for his services in summer 2024.
Liverpool missed out on signing Alvarez back then due to the deal falling apart - and have since recruited Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike to fill their striking slots.
But the reports linking Alvarez to Anfield have never truly gone away - with Liverpool having the former River Plate prodigy on their wishlist since his days as a young player.
Alvarez, under contract at Atletico until 2030, has been linked with the exit in recent months and has been said to be disillusioned with Diego Simeone’s side inability to compete for the major prizes.
He has been hauled off frequently by his fellow countryman - although his goals in the past few games should buy him some extra unimpeded game time.
And now Liverpool have learned what it will take to land Alvarez in summer 2026 - with a report in Football Insider claiming that the bidding will start at £100m.
“It would be a surprise if Liverpool were to pursue a move for Alvarez,” the report reads.
“He was on their list, but that was before they signed Isak. Obviously then they’ve got Ekitike as well, that’s two forwards already brought in to bolster the attack.
“It looks a real difficult deal to do now just due to the finances involved. I don’t think Atletico Madrid want to lose Julian Alvarez either. He’s a real key man for Diego Simeone’s side.
“He’s under contract at the Metropolitano until 2030 as well, it a huge fee to even consider selling him. You’re probably looking around the £100million mark.”
