Kalvin Phillips 'to finalise' Sheffield United loan return alongside Patrick Bamford | OneFootball

The Daily Mail reports that Kalvin Phillips is finalising a season-long return to Sheffield United, a second loan with the Blades, and that Chris Wilder wants the reunion despite the midfielder’s injury-hit spell earlier this year.

The 30-year-old joined for the second half of last season but made only three appearances, the last bringing a red card against rivals Sheffield Wednesday. He suffered a knee injury in that match, required surgery, and the setback ended the loan.

Back at Manchester City this summer, hopes of a fresh start under Enzo Maresca faded when the Italian omitted him from Tuesday evening’s 28-man pre-season tour of Asia.

Phillips has two years left on the six-year deal he signed on leaving Leeds in 2022, but he has no future at the Etihad. Before January he managed one eight-minute Carabao Cup cameo in a 3-0 win over Huddersfield Town. Across four years at City he has started just two Premier League games, while top-flight loans at Ipswich Town and West Ham underwhelmed amid injury and rust.

Earlier this summer, The Star reported that Phillips would be keen on a Bramall Lane return, with the January move letting him live closer to family. He was also believed to have had a positive influence on young midfielders Oliver Arblaster and Sydie Peck, aged 22 and 21 respectively.

A fresh loan would reunite the Leeds promotion hero with former Elland Road team-mate Patrick Bamford, who joined the Blades as a free agent last year before signing an 18-month deal in January.
