Harry Kane marked his return from injury in style as Bayern Munich secured a 2-1 first-leg victory over Real Madrid in their Champions League quarter-final at the Bernabéu.

Bayern dominated much of the first half, creating numerous chances despite missing a couple of gilt-edged opportunities, including one from Dayot Upamecano. Their pressure paid off five minutes before half-time when Serge Gnabry teed up Luis Diaz, who calmly slotted past Andriy Lunin.

The England international then doubled the lead almost immediately after the break with a precise finish into the bottom corner, marking his 49th goal of the season.

Real began to respond midway through the second half, with Jude Bellingham coming off the bench to spark a revival. Kylian Mbappé capitalised on a trademark Trent Alexander-Arnold pass in the 74th minute to pull a goal back, sending the Bernabéu into a frenzy and making the remainder of the match a tense battle. Manuel Neuer was called into action multiple times, producing a string of fine saves to keep the Bavarians ahead.

The hosts continued to press, creating chance after chance, but Bayern’s organisation and composure proved enough to hold them at bay. Vinicius Jr. came close on several occasions, and Federico Valverde’s efforts tested Neuer, but none found the back of the net. Bayern also came close to extending their lead, with Kane, Olise and Upamecano all denied by either the goalkeeper or the woodwork.

In the end, Bayern held on for a crucial away win that puts them in a strong position heading into the Allianz Arena next week. While the second leg promises more fireworks, Kane’s clinical finishing and the team’s early dominance could prove decisive in the race for a Champions League semi-final spot.
