Karl Darlow’s departure has crystallised Leeds United’s need for a new goalkeeper, with Lucas Perri under scrutiny after losing his place under Daniel Farke.

According to Leeds Live, a keeper was already on the agenda and rivals can now push up fees, with funds ringfenced.

A £34million move for Sassuolo defender Tarik Muharemovic is close. The purse is thought similar to last year’s £100m, though new Squad Cost Ratio rules bite. Pascal Struijk’s £18m sale is the only departure so far.

Perri is nominally first choice and Alex Cairns is back-up. Darlow had a new offer without a number one guarantee, so chose a payday with the old enemy in Manchester.

The Wales no.1, set for limited minutes at Old Trafford, impressed for Leeds during the run-in but, at 35, is not irreplaceable.

Leeds must decide whether to back Perri for a revival, accept him as number two or seek an exit. Torino interest has been discussed, yet there were no direct talks earlier this week, and selling before recruiting would be reckless.

Newcastle United-linked Zion Suzuki, of Japan and Parma, is on the list. Most Premier League clubs will be interested in James Trafford, who is destined to leave Manchester City this summer. SC Braga’s Lukas Hornicek has been watched, while Ramsdale links appear baseless. No formal moves yet.

With the US tour starting Tuesday and the market expected to accelerate after the World Cup and holidays, timing matters. Leeds need bedding-in time and must get this decision right.
