Karl Darlow has left Leeds United for Manchester United, turning down a new deal at Elland Road to take what he called a special opportunity. The 35-year-old Wales international departs after helping win promotion and then secure Premier League status.

Leeds had offered fresh terms but, with plans to sign a goalkeeper this summer, could not guarantee him a starting place.

In an Instagram farewell set to Olivia Dean’s Ok Love You Bye, Darlow thanked team-mates, coaches and staff, praised the supporters and said he would watch from afar with pride in his part of the club’s journey.

Given the rivalry over the Pennines, his well wishes may find little sympathy among many Leeds fans.

Manchester United later released his comments, with Darlow saying he was proud to join, that he is part of an excellent group of goalkeepers and that they will push one another to maintain the standards the club demands.

He described the move as a special opportunity, adding that he is eager to support his team-mates and help drive the group forwards. Director of football Jason Wilcox said Darlow has shown top-level quality and brings experience, work ethic and determination to their goalkeeping unit.
