Leeds United look set to miss out on re-signing Karl Darlow, with the goalkeeper close to joining Manchester United, according to The Athletic. The 35-year-old is a free agent after leaving Elland Road last month.

Leeds had held talks over an extension, but interest also arrived from Manchester United and Everton, both believed to have tabled offers. Leeds made their own proposal, yet the club now appear to have lost the race.

A deal is at an advanced stage, with United moving to add cover for first-choice Senne Lammens. The Belgian is set to keep the No 1 role after his £18 million switch from Royal Antwerp last season, with Darlow expected to be back-up and Altay Bayindir likely to depart this summer.

Darlow, a Welsh international, finished last season as Leeds’ first-choice after dislodging £16 million summer signing Lucas Perri in January. Mistakes against Manchester United and Newcastle cost the Brazilian his place.

Darlow made 22 Premier League starts, including a 2-1 win at Old Trafford in April. He kept five of Leeds’ eight top-flight clean sheets.

His decision to seek a new challenge is a blow for Daniel Farke, who currently has only one senior goalkeeper in Lucas Perri. Illan Meslier has left Leeds for Premier League champions Arsenal.
