“We knew that if we play at our top level, we'd win today,” said Joshua Kimmich following Germany's Group A closer against Slovakia. And it is safe to say that both came to fruition, with Germany condemning Slovakia to the play-offs with a 6-0 win in Leipzig.
“The coach prepared us very well, and found the right words,” added the captain, who made his return to the fold after recent injury concerns. “Everyone knew what was at stake. I told the guys that the World Cup is the biggest competition a player can play.”
“I'm happy with the way we won. Also, compliments to our physios and doctors who made sure I was ready for the game.”
Kimmich inherited captain duties from Manuel Neuer following his international retirement, and thrived upon his return tonight. Operating from right-back, the versatile midfielder/defender assisted Germany's opening goal of the evening, setting the tone for what would be a dominant victory.
The man who headed home from the delicious Kimmich ball, Nick Woltemade, added that: “It was a very good game. We showed from the first second that we were determined to win.”
“We were active, creative and had fun on the pitch. It was a nice moment to qualify for the World Cup. It's nice to play for Germany and score goals.”
Woltemade continues to become more and more important for the national team, adding another fine display to his collection tonight.
With the spot up front seemingly his heading into next summer's tournament, the striker concluded, saying: “Hopefully I'll keep this up in the tournament next year.”
