Julian Nagelsmann’s men endured a frustrating first half as they couldn’t find a way through Luxembourg’s resolute defence.

Four minutes after the break, Woltemade latched onto an excellent ball from Leroy Sane and stabbed it home.

The centre-forward doubled their advantage 20 minutes later as he shrugged off two defenders before putting the ball into the bottom corner.

Die Mannschaft could have added a third had Liverpool’s Florian Wirtz not had his shot blocked towards the end.

Germany now lead Group A on goal difference ahead of their crucial fixture with Slovakia on Monday.

Woltemade continues excellent form

Not many people were convinced when Newcastle splashed a club-record £69 million fee for Woltemade in the summer.

But the 23-year-old has proved all his doubters wrong, scoring four goals in eight Premier League appearances since arriving at the club.

Woltemade carried his club form onto the international stage as he bagged a double to help Germany to a comfortable win.

He will look to make a similar impact on Monday against Slovakia, as victory in that game will secure automatic World Cup qualification for his nation.

The losing team will face a play-off to qualify for the tournament.
