Klopp as Germany’s national team coach: Is Bayern’s dominance at the DFB coming to an end? | OneFootball

Jürgen Klopp is on the verge of being officially introduced as the new head coach of the German national team. The 59-year-old is tasked with leading the German national team back to success following its disappointing World Cup elimination against Paraguay. From FC Bayern’s perspective, the focus is now primarily on one question: What role will the Munich team play under Klopp in the future?

The German Football Association has called a press conference for Friday at 11 a.m. According to consistent media reports, Jürgen Klopp’s appointment will be officially announced there. Following Hansi Flick and Julian Nagelsmann, another top German coach is taking the helm of the national team—though one with a different background than his two predecessors.

While Flick and Nagelsmann each had close ties to FC Bayern, Klopp’s career has been shaped primarily by his successful stints at Borussia Dortmund and later at Liverpool FC.

No Bayern advantage—but no disadvantages either

On the “Bayern Insider” podcast, BILD reporter Heiko Niedderer explains that this could change the starting point. “Flick and Nagelsmann had very close ties to FC Bayern. That’s not the case with Klopp. We know he’s closer to BVB, Watzke, and the entire club. So the big question now is how things will proceed with Bayern,” said Niedderer.

At the same time, however, he emphasized that there is absolutely no tension between Klopp and the record champions. On the contrary: Bayern President Herbert Hainer recently publicly described the 59-year-old as the ideal solution to succeed Julian Nagelsmann.

BILD’s head of soccer, Christian Falk, also sees no cause for concern. “Even though he naturally leans more toward BVB in the Bundesliga, he’s no Bayern hater,” Falk clarified.

Bayern is likely to continue providing the framework

There have been several points of contact between Klopp and FC Bayern in the past. It’s an open secret that Uli Hoeneß wanted to bring the now-successful coach to Munich as early as 2008. In the end, however, the record champions opted for Jürgen Klinsmann.

Even during Klopp’s time at Liverpool FC, his name kept cropping up as a potential Bayern coach. However, a collaboration never materialized.

From a sporting perspective, however, the new national team coach will likely find it hard to ignore the Munich club. At the World Cup, FC Bayern once again provided the largest contingent in the DFB squad with seven players. Added to that were the injured Lennart Karl and Serge Gnabry, who, had they been fully fit, would also have had realistic chances of being selected.

Klopp will have to base his decisions exclusively on athletic criteria going forward. Given the high quality of Bayern’s roster, however, there is every reason to believe that the record champions will continue to form the backbone of the German national team under the new head coach. The Munich-based national team players will play a central role, particularly with regard to the Nations League and the long-term preparations for the 2028 European Championship.

Whether Klopp introduces new approaches or relies on the tried-and-true Bayern core is likely to be one of the most intriguing questions during his early days as national team coach.
