FC Bayern made history with a 3-1 away win at 1. FC Köln on matchday 17, crowning a first half of the season the likes of which the Bundesliga has never seen before. Vincent Kompany’s side ended the first half of the season with 47 points and an impressive goal difference of 66:13 – new records in the history of the German top flight

FCB initially suffered a setback in Cologne, but after falling behind early on, the team once again proved their mental strength and turned the game around with aplomb. Serge Gnabry, Minjae Kim and Lennart Karl scored to ensure that the Munich side overcame this hurdle and completed the historic record. The reward: a dominant lead in the table and status as the most successful first-half team of all time

Guardiola record clearly surpassed

Bayern had previously set the benchmark themselves. In the 2013/14 season, the team under Pep Guardiola had also collected 47 points at the winter break, with a goal difference of 44:9. Kompany has now not only equalled this mark, but clearly surpassed it in one crucial category. With 66 goals scored, the Munich side have improved their own record by a whopping 18 goals – a figure that impressively underlines the offensive power of this team

Back then, Bayern secured the German championship at the end of the 2013/14 season with 90 points and a goal difference of 94:23, as well as winning the DFB Cup. The current team is even one step ahead statistically – and brings back memories of the great Bayern years

Hunt for further records begins

A look at the history books shows that even greater records are achievable. In the treble season of 2012/13, the Munich team collected 91 points under Jupp Heynckes – the highest points tally in a Bundesliga season to date. This record does not seem out of reach either, given the current consistency

Even more venerable is the goal record from the 1971/72 season, when FC Bayern scored an incredible 101 goals under Gerd Müller. The current attacking machine is working flat out to shake this historic mark as well. The figures from the first half of the season at least leave room for speculation

The name Harry Kane is inextricably linked with the goal issue. In that legendary 1971/72 season, Gerd Müller set what was long considered an unattainable record of 40 goals for the season. Robert Lewandowski surpassed this figure in 2020/21 with 41 goals – a record that could now also come under scrutiny

Kane is already in a strong position and has everything it takes to join this illustrious ranks. His rate, consistency and Bayern’s attacking dominance suggest that this personal best is not a certainty this season either

However, FC Bayern is not standing still. The next tough test awaits on Saturday with the away game at RB Leipzig, where the record champions can continue their impressive run and take the next step towards defending their title

The first half of the season is history – a historic one. But the message from Vincent Kompany’s team is clear: these Bavarians are far from fed up. The second half of the season begins, and with it the hunt for more records.
