Bayern was forced to settle for a 2-2 draw away at Hamburg on Matchday 20 in the Bundesliga. “We knew it was going to be a difficult away game today because there are no easy opponents. My guys fought well today and I wont let anyone take that away from us,” head coach Vincent Kompany said in praise of his players following the clash with his former club. Manuel Neuer proved frustrated with the dropped points, but also saw positives in the draw: “Looking into the faces of my teammates, I see positive signs we'll be back on the attack next week.” fcbayern.com rounds up the reaction to the Matchday 20 fixture in Hamburg.
Max Eberl (board member for sport): “We only collected one point, but we wanted to win. We always said it wasn't as easy for us as it might look at times. At the moment, we're being punished for our mistakes. We had to battle great obstacles today. We've just gone through a very tough month. This is a difficult period we have to accept and fight through. I'm not looking for excuses. We could’ve scored more goals and defended better. Now, this month is in the past and we have one week to recharge our batteries. Physically, we're in a great place, but it's important to have a mental break.”
Vincent Kompany: “There are no easy games. We knew it was going to be a difficult away game today because there are no easy opponents. There were so many interruptions during the game. We could have added 25 minutes at the end. It wasn't a good performance of ours, but it was a good Bundesliga game because both teams showed great intensity. My guys fought well today and I wont let anyone take that away from us. We've now played seven games in 20 days. In the end, this was a draw and not a defeat. Now, we're going to do what we always do. We’ll show a reaction on the pitch.”
Manuel Neuer: “Obviously, this draw feels more like a defeat to us. However, I think it's a good sign that nobody is satisfied. We had other plans for today. I believe we were a bit unlucky. We had some good chances, particularly in the second half. We hit the post and had a few shots cleared off the line too. There were a few decisions in the penalty box which didn't go our way either. These are the games in which very fine margins make the difference. Today was about fighting. And we certainly showed great fighting spirit today. There's nothing to be ashamed of today. Looking into the faces of my teammates, I see positive signs we'll be back on the attack next week.”
Harry Kane: “It was a difficult game against an opponent who’s particularly good at home with the fans and the atmosphere here. The first half was tough and probably a 50-50 game. Still, we had opportunities to do a better job in the final third. I thought we played well in the second half. We looked like the more dangerous team. However, today we had to deal with some adverse circumstances. I'm proud of the team and the fight we showed. We have to keep pushing. We've just experienced an extremely intense month with many games, but we can’t complain about that. It's still a long way to go this season and we have no reason to be nervous. We simply have to prepare well.”
Merlin Polzin (head coach): “We showed quite a few things on the pitch today that we prepared with the team during the week. I'm very happy we were able to use the magic of our home stadium for our performance. We repeated at half-time that we would prefer our players to risk making mistakes rather than play with fear. We were able time and again to create good situations. On top of that, you need a bit of luck not to concede too many goals, and we had that today.”
Luka Vušković (defender): “I'm enjoying every second I can play for Hamburg. Maybe my goal was a little bit lucky, but when you play one of the best teams in the world, you need a bit of luck.”
