Sunderland have confirmed the signing of Nilson Angulo on a four-and-a-half-year contract, with an option for a further year. Sunderland Echo understands the initial fee is around £15 million, with up to £2.5 million in add-ons.
The 22-year-old Ecuador international has impressed in the Belgian Pro League this season, producing seven goals and eight assists in 30 appearances in all competitions.
Sporting director Kristjaan Speakman called Angulo an exciting wide player, quick and creative, effective in the decisive actions in the final third, and arriving with strong ambition. He also highlighted the winger’s senior experience at domestic level, in Europe and with Ecuador.
Angulo’s arrival capped a busy deadline day. It began with Adil Aouchiche being recalled from his Aberdeen loan before joining Bundesliga 2 side Schalke on a permanent deal. That opened an international loan slot, enabling Simon Adingra to join Ligue 1 side Monaco on loan, with an option to buy at the end of the season for around £15 million.
Speakman said the Adingra move suited all parties, reflecting the squad’s balance and priorities, and should ensure the winger plays regularly in the second half of the campaign. He added that the stature of the move underlines Adingra’s qualities and professionalism, and Sunderland will monitor his progress.
