Leeds closed their 2025/26 Elland Road campaign with a last-gasp 1-0 win over Brighton, Dominic Calvert-Lewin nicking in after Jan Paul van Hecke’s back-pass to round Bart Verbruggen. The result moved Leeds to 47 points and 14th.
According to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, Daniel Farke called it the season’s most difficult week amid injuries, with Pascal Struijk lost last time out and captain Ethan Ampadu recovering from illness to play 90 minutes. He said Anton Stach was hurt when an opponent landed on his knee or ankle, hoped it was not serious with the World Cup close, and would await medical assessment of a possible ankle problem.
Despite depleted numbers, Leeds stifled Champions League-chasing Brighton, who snatched at chances after raising the tempo. Ampadu made a goal-saving clearance and bossed midfield.
World Cup concerns linger. Brenden Aaronson went off with a dead leg midway through the second half, while Stach was stretchered away after initially trying to continue, following an awkward fall in a duel with Carlos Baleba.
England manager Thomas Tuchel was at Wembley on Saturday for the FA Cup semi-final and will have noted Elland Road, where Calvert-Lewin and Danny Welbeck started on 13 league goals apiece. Welbeck threatened before going off on 64 minutes, Calvert-Lewin stayed on and struck late to reach 14, more than Welbeck and level with Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins as the joint leading English scorer in the Premier League, three in his last three before Tuchel names his squad on Friday.
