Leeds United took a sizeable step towards Premier League safety with a 3-0 home win over Wolves. The result moved them nine points clear of 18th place.
Daniel Farke’s side flew out of the blocks, with James Justin and Noah Okafor scoring in quick succession. "What a time to do it," said opening scorer Justin to Sky Sports.
In the second half Wolves gained a foothold, Karl Darlow made a fine save and Adam Armstrong had a goal chalked off for offside. In added time, Dominic Calvert-Lewin won a penalty and converted it with composure to seal victory.
Leeds got a major boost as Joe Rodon returned to the squad 75 minutes before kick-off, less than two weeks after ankle ligament damage at West Ham in the FA Cup. Initially slated for May, it is his second early comeback this season. With the game all but done, Farke gave him minutes before Wednesday’s trip to Bournemouth.
Whether Rodon features at the Vitality Stadium remains to be seen, and Jaka Bijol, Justin and Pascal Struijk have not deserved to be dropped. His early return lifts Leeds for the FA Cup semi-final next weekend and the run-in.
Okafor was a constant menace and soon added the second from a Brenden Aaronson pass for his seventh Premier League goal. He now has five in his last five around a hamstring lay-off. Farke withdrew him with more than 20 minutes left to keep him fresh for Chelsea at Wembley next week.
