Leeds United took another big step towards Premier League survival with a 3-0 home win over Wolves on Saturday. The result moved them nine points clear of 18th place.
Daniel Farke’s side started on the front foot and struck twice in quick succession through James Justin and Noah Okafor, and it could easily have been more. According to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, it was a solid rather than electric display.
Wolves improved after the break, forcing Karl Darlow into a fine save, before Adam Armstrong had a finish ruled out for offside. In second-half added time, Dominic Calvert-Lewin won a penalty and converted to seal the points.
There was a significant injury boost as Joe Rodon returned to the squad 75 minutes before kick-off, after Farke had hinted at a surprise on Thursday. Less than two weeks earlier the centre-back suffered ankle ligament damage at West Ham in the FA Cup and was initially expected back in May.
Okafor’s form looks timely. Leeds pressed high and he threatened every time he isolated a defender out wide.
It has been a defining few days, a first league victory at Old Trafford since 1981 followed by a convincing home success. With five games to play, Leeds have grabbed the moment.
