However, the big story focused on Diego Simeone’s side, as Los Rojiblancos secured their first win of the new campaign.

Getafe 2-0 Real Oviedo

Getafe’s strong start to the season continued on their return to Madrid as Jose Bordalas’ team swept past 10-man Real Oviedo.

In an odd twist, both of the hosts goals came in first half added time, as Mario Martin stole in at the back post to head home his first goal of the campaign.

Borja Igesias also notched his first of 2025/26, in the eighth minute of time added on, with Real Oviedo unable to recover.

Athletic Club 0-1 Alaves

Athletic Club geared up for their UEFA Champions League clash with Arsenal in an odd 1-0 derby defeat to Alaves.

After a first half which produced little at either end, Alex Berenguer’s bizarre own goal edged Alaves in front.

Inaki Williams missed a superb late chance to equalise as Athletic Club’s winning start to the campaign ends at three games.

Atletico Madrid 2-0 Villarreal

In Saturday’s final clash, the pressure was firmly on Simeone, after a miserable start to the season for the Argentinian.

However, the early nerves were eased on nine minutes, as Julian Alvarez calmly slotted home from close range.

That opened up the contest at both ends as Nicolas Pepe rattled the Atletico crossbar just before the break.

The balance tipped back in Atletico’s favour after the restart, to give Simeone some vital relief, and debutant Nico Gonzalez got on the end of Marcos Llorente’s cross to nod home his first goal in Spanish football.
