Konrad Laimer did his bit in the biggest win in Austria’s international history on Thursday night. The FC Bayern utility player scored the sixth goal just before half-time in the team’s 10-0 thrashing of San Marino. Marko Arnautovic (8’, 47’, 83’, 84’) bagged four goals, with Romano Schmid (7’), Michael Gregoritsch (24’), Stefan Posch (30’, 42’) and Niko Wurmbrand (76’) also on the scoresheet for the hosts. Laimer, who’s recently impressed for FCB at full-back, played the full 90 minutes as the 10 in the thumping victory.

Perfect in qualifying

The fifth win in five matches in qualifying for the 2026 World Cup saw Austria move to top spot in Group H – exactly as Laimer and Co intended. “What we expect of ourselves is that we pick up from where we’ve left off,” said the versatile 28-year-old ahead of the game. “No matter who the opponents are, we want to win both games.” Ralf Rangnick’s side have fulfilled the first part of that, now they travel to Bucharest to play Romania on Sunday (20:45 CEST).
