Despite having suffered from some physical problems, including pubalgia, in recent months, the Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal has started the year 2026 in flying fashion. Since mid-January, he has scored 5 goals and provided 2 assists in 7 appearances, while also contributing a lot without the ball.
Thus, despite being only 18 years of age, the winger continues to impress with his performances, while also putting up the numbers to showcase his rise.
In this latter regard, SPORT reports that Yamal has already surpassed one of the biggest names in Barcelona history. His goal against Albacete in the Copa del Rey, which helped secure a 1-2 victory and a place in the semifinals, was his 39th for the club, overtaking Diego Armando Maradona, who scored 38 goals during his time at Barça.
Maradona reached that tally in just 58 matches between September 1982 and April 1984, averaging 0.65 goals per game despite suffering from injuries and health setbacks. Yamal, on the other hand, needed 135 matches to surpass the Argentine legend.
Beyond his goal-scoring achievements, Yamal has become a key figure for both Hansi Flick’s Barcelona and Luis de la Fuente’s Spanish national team. His contributions on both ends of the pitch demonstrate a maturity beyond his years and a level of consistency that makes him one of the most promising young talents in world football.
At 18, Lamine Yamal is already a global figure, leading by example and breaking records once thought untouchable. If he continues at this level, the sky is the limit for the young winger, who could soon cement himself as one of the greatest players in Barcelona’s history.
