Latest: Chelsea go to special measures to get Cole Palmer training next week

Enzo Maresca has just dropped the biggest Chelsea news of the week – that Cole Palmer is ruled out of tomorrow’s game against Burnley, plus both fixtures next week against Arsenal and Barcelona, because of a fractured toe he stubbed in the night at home this week.

Palmer’s custom boot could bring forward return time

But there may be more to it than that. Maresca was confident Palmer wouldn’t be able to play at all, but since then Matt Law has put out an interesting update. The Chelsea reporter for the Telegraph says that Palmer’s left boot has been adapted to protect the painful toe, and at the very least will allow him to train next week.

Law even speculates that Palmer could play it in the custom boot – meaning a return for the trip to Leeds in two weeks, or the midweek game against Bournemouth after that is very much on the cards. It will still be very sore of course, but the attacker must be desperate to get back on the pitch.

Some have even speculated that the former Man City man could play in the special boot against Arsenal or Barcelona – but Maresca’s confidence he wouldn’t has convinced us for now.

Palmer will see a specialist, presumably today or tomorrow, to figure out how long the wait will be. In any case, it’s all good for his hernia, which needs more time to heal. He’s sat our since the 20th of September, and every day of rest will help.

In other presser news…

Burnley are going to put up a serious fight tomorrow, and Maresca has already been getting some excuses in early ahead of the game…

As mentioned above, Moises Caicedo is not likely to play tomorrow after Maresca admitted that the midfielder had only just come back from international duty last night.
