Leeds United banked a useful 1-1 draw at Brentford, their first away result in nearly three months. After a drab, attritional contest against one of the league’s strongest home sides, they are three points above the bottom three. A result against Crystal Palace on Saturday would keep them out of the drop zone for Christmas.
Leeds Live highlights several moments many watching from home may have missed.
Officially, 1,707 away supporters attended, but there was a 1,708th. Leeds fan Chris Smith watched from his daughter’s high-rise balcony opposite the G-Tech Stadium, complete with a flag on the rail and a white scarf raised.
On the touchline, Daniel Farke wore every mood. Work with keeper Lucas Perri on distribution did not prevent irritation when passes sailed into touch, and he later felt the long-ball game was below par.
Moments before Jordan Henderson put in Brentford’s opener, Farke was readying Wilfried Gnonto and Brenden Aaronson. He acknowledged he would not have withdrawn Jaka Bijol until the goal, then switched to 4-2-3-1, and it ultimately worked.
Late on, Farke overruled Joe Rodon’s instruction to keep men back for a long throw, sending players forward for a winner. After the whistle, he challenged referee John Brooks over inconsistent decisions, including a soft Brentford penalty overturned for offside, while other scenes saw Ethan Ampadu’s early pitch check before his 100th appearance, Ilia Gruev and Ao Tanaka’s warm-up games, a brief light show and Santa handing out gifts.
