Leeds United supporters will go without their customary Boxing Day fix, with the Premier League staging only one match. There are, however, plenty of ways to keep the day feeling festive.
According to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, Manchester United face Newcastle United in the sole televised top-flight game on 26 December. The schedule fills out on Saturday, then Leeds visit Sunderland in one of Sunday’s two fixtures.
The weather in the Leeds area is due to be fine and dry, making a family walk an appealing option. BBC One has Paddington 2, BBC Two shows The Italian Job and The Great Escape, ITV airs Kung Fu Panda 2. Channel Four carries live AFCON, Egypt against South Africa.
If only live, in-person football will do, non-league offers nearby alternatives. York City’s LNER Community Stadium stages Boston United on Boxing Day in a National League fixture. York are among the leaders, Boston sit 16th, and the hosts will be heavy favourites, having outscored the rest by a distance, so there could be goals.
Two tiers below, Guiseley host Gainsborough Trinity at three pm in the Northern Premier League Premier Division. There is a Yorkshire derby at one pm in Northern Premier League East, Garforth Town against Emley.
At the same time, Bradford Park Avenue welcome Pontefract Collieries. And at three pm in the same division Ossett United host Matlock Town.
Non-league clubs often enjoy bumper Boxing Day gates, vital for those who rely on ticket income. The Premier League’s meagre festive slate need not spoil Christmas.
