Leeds United are set to send 17-year-old striker Harry Gray on loan to Rotherham United until the end of the season. According to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, the deal is being finalised and could be confirmed in the next day or so.

Gray, who turned 17 in October, featured in successive senior pre-season camps and made his Elland Road debut late last term. He came off the bench in a 6-0 win over Stoke City as Leeds marched to the Championship title and promotion. He made the matchday squad for the final three games.

His path differs from that of his older brother Archie, who played a full Championship season before a £40m transfer to Tottenham Hotspur. Gray has been trying to break through in a Premier League environment, while the arrivals of Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Lukas Nmecha have reduced Joel Piroe’s minutes.

Earlier this season Daniel Farke urged patience, arguing that it is harder for a 16 to 19-year-old centre forward to excel consistently at Premier League level than, for example, a full-back in the Championship. He cited rare early exceptions and pointed to careers such as Robert Lewandowski and Harry Kane to stress development takes time.

With first-team action limited to Under 21s football this season, Leeds view Rotherham as a chance for vital match minutes. The Millers are 22nd in League One and the short trip keeps Gray close to home, allowing the club and his family to track his progress closely.
