Gerhard Struber made four changes to his Bristol City side ahead of this match, as Sam Morsy, Max Bird, Ross McCrorie and Scott Twine came in to the starting XI. Meanwhile, Leicester made three changes with Hamza Choudery, Jordan James and Jordan Ayew coming in from the off.

The Robins applied early pressure to Leicester with a string of corners inside the opening minutes, however they couldn’t make the most of them, with Neto Borges eventually heading over the bar. However, it was the Foxes who registered the first shot on target of the night with Stephy Mavididi forcing Radek Vitek into a good save.

It was then the hosts who opened the scoring after 12 minutes, when central defender Nelson rose highest and headed home to give his side the lead. Bristol City searched for a quick reply as they won yet another corner, but didn’t get themselves on the scoresheet.

Leicester came close to doubling their lead in the 23rd minute as Mavididi saw his driven strike ping off the post and back inot the penalty area before being cleared by the Bristol City defence. Their goal did come through Fatawu just minutes later though as his volley powered past Vitek and into the back of the net, putting the hosts 2-0 to the good.

Choudhury received the first yellow card of the night with ten minutes of the first-half left to play, before Tomi Horvat looked to net the first goal of his Bristol City career but his left-footed strike flashed high and wide of the goal, bringing the first-half to a close.

The visitors made a change at half-time that saw Mark Sykes replace Bird. Ten minutes later the Foxes nearly added a third as Jason Knight almost put the ball into his own net. The Robins made two further changes on the hour mark with McCrorie and Twine withdrawn in favour of Cameron Pring and Sinclair Armstrong. Borges picked up the away side’s first booking of the game for a foul on Fatawu in the 61st minute.

Just two minutes later, Bristol City were awarded their first penalty in over a year, with Nelson being booked for the foul, however Jakub Stolsrczyk got down low to deny Emil Riis from the spot. Leicester’s first changes of the match followed with James, Ayew and Choudhury’s evening coming to an end and Harry Winks, Patson Daka and Ricardo Pereira being introduced for the final stages of the game.

Daka almost made an instant impact, seeing his shot well saved by Vitek. Moments later, Fatawu almost netted his second of the night but couldn’t hit the target with his long-range effort. Another change for the home side followed as former Bristol City striker Bobby Decordova-Reid made way for Divine Mukasa for the final ten minutes.

Delano Burgzorg made his way off the bench to replace Riis in the 81st minute, as the Middlesbrough loanee hoped to help his side find a way back into the game. Leicester won themselves a corner with five minutes of regular time remaining, but it was comfortabnly dealt with by the Robins’ defence.

As four minutes of additonal time were announced, Armstrong saw yellow following a bad foul. The hosts final change saw Nigerian midfielder Joe Aribo replace Fatawu. Morsy received a yellow card in the final moments for a foul on Harry Winks, as Leicester confirmed a massive win in their fight for survival.
