Flamengo have reached the Carioca final for the eighth year running, and remarkably each of those deciders has come under a different head coach.
According to Globo.com, the club recovered from the brink of the relegation quadrangular, benefitted from results elsewhere and now stand on a competition record run of finals.
The sequence began in 2019 under Abel Braga, who delivered the title against Vasco, then resigned a month later after learning the club were negotiating with Jorge Jesus.
In 2020 Jorge Jesus made the Carioca his last trophy at Flamengo, defeating Fluminense, before Benfica paid his release clause that same month to take him back to Portugal.
Rogério Ceni, appointed in November 2020 after Domènec Torrent’s dismissal, beat Fluminense in the 2021 final to complete a hat-trick of titles.
After Ceni and Renato Gaúcho departed, Paulo Sousa led the 2022 campaign to the final, but Fluminense took the crown and his tenure was short-lived.
Vitor Pereira started 2023 following the decision not to renew with Dorival Júnior, reached the final and again lost to Fluminense, then was dismissed soon after a 4-1 defeat.
Tite arrived later that year to replace the also dismissed Jorge Sampaoli, and in 2024 won the Carioca over Nova Iguaçu, though he did not finish the season and was sacked.
His successor Filipe Luís guided Flamengo through another state decider against Fluminense and claimed another Carioca.
Now the Portuguese Leonardo Jardim has taken charge this week, replacing the dismissed Filipe Luís after the club’s worst start in 10 years. The opponents are again Fluminense, with this final to be settled in a single match at the Maracanã on Sunday at 18h Brasília time. Flamengo are chasing a seventh ‘tri’ in the club’s history.
