Real Sociedad are back in Seville and, if they win, someone will surely replace Asier Illarramendi to trumpet Txuri Urdin. According to Diario Vasco, one memory from 3 April 2021 refuses to fade.
At La Cartuja, a tense match without fans ended with Mikel Oyarzabal converting a 62:43 penalty after Iñigo Martínez fouled Portu. Another penalty should have been given for a Martínez handball, the key still surfaced days later.
Within curfew rules, the squad cut loose in a vast hotel hall. After on-pitch photos and a boisterous bus ride, dinner gave way to full-blown revelry.
Nothing was planned so they improvised. Illarramendi needed a trumpet. Carlos Fernández played fixer and his cousin rode a motorbike through curfew to deliver one, risking a fine so the txuri-urdin party lacked nothing.
Injured the day before, Illarramendi still hit the notes. Then a Copa del Rey replica became a giant gin and tonic, and some say the cup in Estadio de Anoeta’s cabinet still smells of festivity.
Director of football Roberto Olabe told players and staff, as he hugged them, that this was what winning meant.
They say the wake-up for the charter found a new champion on a pool lounger. Outside the hotel, fans hailed Imanol Alguacil after his Erreala Ale with a Real scarf, while Adnan Januzaj stayed inconsolable after not playing.
Everyone made the bus except Andoni Gorosabel, who overslept. Departure slipped by 40 minutes, the coach finally rolling to the airport with a Cup in the hold.
