Bayer Leverkusen ran riot at the BayArena on Saturday, demolishing 1. FC Heidenheim 6-0 in the Bundesliga.
Things could hardly have started better for Leverkusen, who took the lead after just two minutes with a lightning counterattack.
Ernest Poku surged forward and slipped the ball through to Patrik Schick, who made no mistake, firing past Diant Ramaj in the Heidenheim goal.
Jonas Hofmann doubled the advantage in the 16th minute, nodding home completely unmarked from Edmond Tapsoba’s cross.
Leverkusen extended their lead just six minutes later, capitalising on a defensive mix-up. Ramaj and Patrick Mainka collided, leaving the ball rolling invitingly towards goal, and Schick was on hand to tap in his second for 3-0.
But the hosts weren’t finished yet. With 27 minutes on the clock, Arthur delivered a teasing cross that Poku met with a powerful finish to make it 4-0.
Just before halftime, Ibrahim Maza extended Bayer 04’s lead even further, converting Aleix Garcia’s cross to make it 5–0 heading into the break.
Leverkusen picked up where they left off after the break, as Maza burst into the box and finished with the outside of his boot for his second goal of the afternoon in the 53rd minute.
Heidenheim had to wait until the 69th minute to register their first shot. Marnon Busch broke through on the right and laid the ball back to Arijon Ibrahimovic, but Robert Andrich threw himself in the way to block the effort.
Ultimately, it ended in a resounding 6–0 victory for fourth-placed Bayer Leverkusen, leaving Heidenheim rock-bottom in the standings.
