Lionel Messi scored twice for Argentina on Friday in what is likely to be his final competitive appearance in his home nation.
The Inter Miami star grabbed a goal either side of Lautaro Martinez’ 76th-minute strike as the reigning world champions beat Venezuela 3-0 in Buenos Aires.
Argentina had already secured qualification to the 2026 World Cup before their penultimate qualifier, while Venezuela are still in contention for a play-off spot despite the defeat.
An emotional Messi was joined by his three sons and received a standing ovation from a crowd of 80,000 before kickoff.
The 38-year-old, who captained Argentina to glory at the World Cup in Qatar four years ago, is expected to retire from international football after next summer’s tournament in North America.
Messi was grateful for the opportunity to bid farewell to the Argentina fans after being the same chance following his abrupt exit from Barcelona in 2021.
“There are so many emotions. I’ve experienced so many things on this field,” said Messi.
“It’s always a joy to play in Argentina with our people. I’m very happy. Being able to finish in this way here is what I always dreamed of.
“For many years I have had the affection of Barcelona, and my dream was to have it here too, in my country with my people. For many years a lot of things were said but, well, I’ll stay with all the good.”
The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner has scored a record 114 goals in 194 games for his country.
