Lionel Scaloni offered a cautious update after Lionel Messi went off injured for Inter Miami on Sunday, saying the initial news is not so bad less than two weeks before the 2026 World Cup.

In the final MLS match before the tournament, Messi asked to be substituted after feeling discomfort in his left hamstring during Inter Miami’s 6-2 win over Philadelphia.

“We would obviously prefer that nothing had happened to him. Now we have to wait to see how he evolves. The first news is not so bad,” said Scaloni, speaking to DSports.

“We were watching the match from the federation offices. In the end, it suited us, avoiding any potential aggravation.”

On Monday the issue was described as overuse associated with muscle fatigue in his left thigh, with no return date given. The 38-year-old has carefully managed his minutes since arriving in MLS in 2023. Argentina begin their title defence on 16 June against Algeria in Group J, with Jordan and Austria also involved.
