Inter Milan hope it is third time lucky as they make fresh approach for midfielder

Inter Milan are preparing to make a third approach for Curtis Jones days after footage of the midfielder arguing with his Liverpool team-mates went viral.

The Nerazzurri have been weighing up a move for Jones throughout the summer and, per The Athletic, saw a €25million (£21.7m) bid rejected in June before then seeing a €32m offer also rejected. Liverpool have informed the club they are hoping to land a fee closer to €40m (£34.3m).

And Inter are prepared to come again with a fresh offer for the midfielder. They are said to have contacted Liverpool via intermediaries to express an interest in bidding around €35m.

The offer is still well short of Liverpool’s valuation, which is thought to be based on the fee Tottenham paid for Conor Gallagher in January. It is not yet clear whether the Reds are willing to sell.

Jones, who came through the Kirkby academy, is entering the final year of his Liverpool contract and may be prepared to leave the club as he looks to become a first-choice option away from Anfield, where he is currently entrenched behind Dominik Szoboszlai, Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister in the midfield pecking order.

Inter’s latest bid comes after Jones was caught on camera having a heated argument with Szoboszlai and Kostas Tsimikas after the Reds beat Wrexham in a friendly on Wednesday morning.

The fallout appeared to be centred around Szoboszlai’s decision to hand Tsimikas the captain’s armband when he was replaced 15 minutes from time.

The three were walking together as the Liverpool squad acknowledged the fans at full-time, and Tsimikas was seen to throw the armband on the ground as their discussion grew heated.

Jones and Szoboszlai then continued bickering as they made their way back to the changing rooms, arguing animatedly on the pitch. Jeremie Frimpong also got involved in an attempt to help mediate.

It remains to be seen whether Jones’ sale will materialise this summer, though Liverpool are expected to remain busy in the transfer market. Andoni Iraola’s squad is dearly lacking defensive options, while the club has yet to replace Mohamed Salah.

Inter completed a deal to sign free agent John Stones on Thursday, with reports in Italy suggesting they are impressed by Napoli’s success in signing Premier League players such as Scott McTominay and Billy Gilmour.
