Former Real Madrid coach Xabi Alonso is reportedly close to taking charge of Liverpool next season.

Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo reported that Alonso has reached a verbal agreement with Liverpool to become the team’s head coach starting in June. The move would mark a return to Anfield for the former midfielder who enjoyed successful playing career with the club.

Alonso briefly managed Real Madrid after the end of last season replacing Carlo Ancelotti but he left the role in January after a difficult run of results.

Deal depends on Liverpool’s season outcome

The possible appointment is linked to Liverpool’s current situation under coach Arne Slot. The club has seen a drop in results during the second season of the Dutch manager.

Reports suggest the agreement with Alonso depends on whether Liverpool qualify for Champions League. If the team fails to secure a place in the competition, the club could move forward with Alonso as the new coach.

In that case, Alonso is expected to sign a three year contract with the English side.
