Liverpool missed out on the transfer deadline day signing of Marc Guehi.
The Reds had agreed to pay an initial £35m for the Crystal Palace captain - who had already completed part of his medical with the Premier League champions.
However the FA Cup holders opted out of the deal at the last minute - with club chairman Steve Parish now admitting the reason why.
“It's a difficult decision," he told talkSPORT.
“I decided in the end that, based on the advice that I got and with what I think, that we would have a better season if we kept Marc.
“If we were fighting between the difference of 10th and 14th, if that was going to be the difference between keeping Marc and letting Marc go, then probably we would have said right, 'We should take the money.'”

Palace tried and failed to land a replacement in the form of Igor Julio on loan from Brighton but the Brazilian ended up at West Ham instead.
Nonetheless, the Eagles look set to integrate two more defenders into the first-team ranks in the weeks and months upcoming.
“We've got Jaydee [Canvot] who's coming in, who's going to develop as a player we hope,” the chairman said.
“We've got Chadi [Riad] coming back from injury. Hopefully, we'll be okay.”
Once Canvot and Riad settle in - to go alongside Maxence Lacroix and Chris Richards - there may come a time when Palace will reconsider a departure for 25-year-old Guehi.
“We've got Chadi coming back, hopefully in October,” Parish added.
“So in theory, we could get to a place where we don't need to buy one.
“We could get to a place where we don't need to replace Marc if we keep him all season.”
