Liverpool right back Jeremie Frimpong has revealed what he has taken from Celtic through his career. The Dutch International joined Arne Slot’s Premier League winners in the summer, stepping into the fullback berth vacated by Trent Alexander-Arnold.
The success for Frimpong, who was picked up from the Man City U19s by Neil Lennon, serves as an example to young players looking to come to Celtic. The player broke through at Celtic, won trophies and was snatched up by a top five league team, where he will look to rack up a Treble.
After a move to the Bundesliga, Frimpong helped Xabi Alonso’s side break Bayern Munich’s monopoly of German football and win the title. This ultimately led to interest from elsewhere and the move to Liverpool.
Speaking to AXA Player Portraits podcast Frimpong was asked about his unusual number.
‘Jeremie, talk to me about your squad number? 30?’
Frimpong: ’30! Obviously, my first professional football number was 30 at Celtic, so I just kept it.
‘At Leverkusen I was 30, and obviously coming to Liverpool, I’m known as 30 and it was free, so I was like…’
Interviewer: ‘It’s got more meaning because you’ve stuck with it.’
Frimpong: ‘Yeah.’
Lennon spotted Frimpong during a friendly at Lennoxtown and managed to get a bargain deal across the line. He was a real surprise package, bursting onto the scene in that League Cup win over Partick Thistle. The positivity of the player was infectious from Frimpong and hopefully he’ll continue his incredible rise to the top of football.
