One Liverpool star appears to have lost his chance to stop being replaced at Anfield.
The final game of the season is right around the corner now. One final match for many Liverpool stars, including Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson.
It's also one final chance for certain players to affect Liverpool's summer transfer plans. Some, after all, will face new competition next season and how the Reds do their business can dramatically change career paths for many.
One who's under the spotlight in that regard is Giorgi Mamardashvili. The Georgian only properly joined Liverpool in the summer but reports suggest that the club is ready to sign another new goalkeeper.
Alisson Becker looks set to leave, after all, and that opens the door for a new goalkeeper. But Liverpool aren't being linked with backup goalkeepers or options for the future - they're being linked with the likes of James Trafford and Diogo Costa.
In other words, goalkeepers who would expect the no.1 shirt.
That's a bit of a disaster for Mamardashvili, then. Richard Hughes looks ready to replace his first Liverpool signing as the future first-choice between the sticks.
But there was a chance for Mamardashvili to change things. The final match against Brentford presented an opportunity for him to send a message to Liverpool of his quality and suitability to be the no.1
However, Alisson appears to have recovered from his injury. Reports are that he's back in training and that means ready to play in what could be his final Liverpool match.
Doing so would rob Mamardashvili of his final chance to send a pre-window message. And that may mean he can't stop being replaced in the summer.
Liverpool Performance and Stats
As of 22 May 2026, Giorgi Mamardashvili is wrapping up his debut season with Liverpool. Filling in extensively during Alisson Becker's injury absences, the 25-year-old Georgian goalkeeper has made a significant number of appearances across all competitions. He recently started in a 1–1 draw against Chelsea on 9 May and played the full 90 minutes in a 4–2 defeat at Aston Villa on 15 May, where he made three saves but suffered behind a shaky defence. He currently holds an average FotMob rating of 6.73.
Future and Transfer News
With Alisson back in full training and expected to start Sunday's final match against Brentford, Mamardashvili could find himself back on the bench. Amid speculation linking Alisson with a summer move to Juventus, former players have debated whether it is a "big ask" for the Georgian to permanently step up as Liverpool's long-term number one.
International Standing
Mamardashvili remains the undisputed first-choice goalkeeper for Georgia and is set to lead his nation at the 2026 World Cup this June.
