Liverpool arrive in Istanbul with momentum from Europe but shadows from the domestic scene. The late win over Atletico Madrid reminded everyone of their resilience, while the defeat to Crystal Palace exposed frailties that Arne Slot cannot ignore. Tonight brings a visit to Galatasaray, a club whose stadium has a reputation for hostility that can unnerve even the strongest sides.

The squad is close to full strength. Giovanni Leoni is the long-term absentee after his ACL injury and Federico Chiesa has been left at home with what Slot described as a “little niggle”. Otherwise, the manager has decisions to make rather than problems to solve.

Alisson Becker should continue in goal, with Giorgi Mamardashvili providing cover. At right-back, Jeremie Frimpong could return to inject attacking thrust, although Dominik Szoboszlai has also been used in that role if Slot wants to fit Florian Wirtz, Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch into the same midfield.

Andy Robertson provides the experience on the left and could return for Milos Kerkez. Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate remain the obvious pairing at centre-back, with Joe Gomez the only real alternative. In midfield, Wirtz has often been moved wide to allow Szoboszlai to play centrally, supported by Mac Allister and Gravenberch. Yet Cody Gakpo’s introduction at the weekend suggested Slot may feel his compatriot deserves more prominence.
There is no question over Mohamed Salah’s place. He continues from the right, the main creative and goalscoring threat. The central striker role is less clear. Alexander Isak provides authority and presence, while Hugo Ekitike waits for his chance to show he can complement rather than compete. Slot’s decision will shape the rhythm of Liverpool’s attack in Istanbul.
Liverpool predicted lineup (4-2-3-1): Alisson, Frimpong, Konate, van Dijk, Robertson, Gravenberch, Mac Allister, Salah, Szoboszlai, Gakpo, Isak.
Injured: Leoni.
Kick-off is 8pm BST on Tuesday, 30 September 2025. The match takes place at RAMS Park and will be streamed live on Amazon Prime in the UK.
